Assistant Farm Manager

We are seeking an Assistant Farm Manager to help grow food to support our Community Food programs and create a welcoming, accessible environment on the farm. This role is rooted in care, community, and justice. You will be trained and work alongside the Farm Manager until you’re ready to complete some tasks independently. Because we grow food primarily for the West End community, we prioritize applicants who live in or have connections to the neighborhood.

Work Environment
Most of the work will take place outdoors on the farm between 7am–3pm, with access to water and bathrooms. Some remote or flexible work may be possible depending on your role. This is a 10-hour/week position, which includes two Saturday community workdays per month.

Responsibilities:

At CANDOR Farm:

  • Support day-to-day farm tasks such as harvesting, building raised beds, watering, weeding, washing, and packing produce

  • Work alongside the Farm Manager and other co-workers

  • Work independently once trained and given instructions for the day

  • Attend and support Saturday community workdays (2x/month)

  • Deliver harvests to community fridges and other Community Food sites within 10 miles of the farm

At the West End Free Market:

  • Set up and break down market (includes carrying/moving food, cleaning, and organizing)

  • Support operations while the market is open

  • Provide deliveries when no volunteers are available

Qualifications:

  • A positive view of disability and a willingness to work with and accommodate disabled people

  • Desire to engage in food justice work in Durham; we define food justice as a grassroots movement to ensure everyone has equal access to enough desirable food

  • A desire to work outdoors

Desired Skills (please apply even if you don’t meet all of these!)

  • 1 or more years of experience volunteering or working at a farm/garden

  • 1 or more years of customer service experience

  • Experience with mutual aid, community organizing, or engagement

  • Volunteer management
